Fun in the Sun

Dear Readers, Thank you for subscribing to The Spark.

My name is Casey Hersch. I am a licensed clinical social worker and founder of LightYourSparkle.Life. As many of you know, I live with autoimmune

illnesses and have a history of childhood trauma, which are my inspirations for the Light Your Sparkle community.

Microdoses of Dirt Improves Gut Health

I grew up with a very germ conscious mother. Even though I lived in the mountains I didn't get dirty very often and when I did, my mom was quick to wash my hands. Mom definitely did everything she could to prevent me from putting my dirty hands in my mouth! As an adult I am having second thoughts about this "oversanitization."

Go Play in the Dirt

As I study Crohn's disease and gut-based disorders more and more, I realize that playing in the dirt is super beneficial to overall health. Did you know that 70 percent of our immune system lives within our gut's walls? Soil-based organisms help our guts thrive and not only can we get these beneficial organisms through fermented foods and probiotics but playing in the dirt is another natural way.  So why not plant a garden, walk barefoot in the soil, or play in some dirt! When you do, you are doing wonders for your immunity and health.

Enjoy Your Pet Companion

Recently I stumbled upon a topic that really made me think. I learned that when we grow up with pets, we have stronger immune systems and less allergies. Thankfully I grew up with cats and dogs! When our pets walk outside and roll around in the dirt, their paws and fur pick-up soil-based organisms from the dirt. When we pet our furry friends, they not only share their love with us, but they also share these friendly soil-based organisms. We need these organisms to have a a healthy gut and immune system. So our pet companions continue to give to us in ways we never imagined!

Spend Time Outdoors

‍Even if you are an adult, don't forget how to play and be a kid! If you want to climb that tree--go for it. When we have mutual exchanges with nature everyone benefits.

Let's have fun in the sun---remember to wear sunscreen and take care of your skin-- but we can all benefit from the vitamins and minerals our body absorbs from outdoor fresh air and dirt!
