Carry It Forward

Dear Readers, Thank you for subscribing to The Spark.

My name is Casey Hersch. I am a licensed clinical social worker and founder of LightYourSparkle.Life. As many of you know, I live with autoimmune

illnesses and have a history of childhood trauma, which are my inspirations for the Light Your Sparkle community.

The challenges of 2020 caused us to take a pause and look at our lives with a new perspective. We examined our habits, routines, and beliefs while sheltering at home, social distancing, and facing health risks. We adapted by focusing our attention on family, exploring new creative outlets, redefining priorities, and adjusting to a slower pace.

As the pandemic appears to be turning around, the tendency might be to let our mindful changes fade. Reverting back to the way things used to be can feel like the comfortable choice. But if we are honest with ourselves, we may find that some of our 2020 shifts were actually beneficial. Embracing new patterns, perspectives, and paradigms was a good lesson for all of us. As we move into the future, there are many reasons to consider carrying these new behaviors forward.

Community

Last year provided moments for reflection and created new opportunites that have nurtured my personal growth and increased my awareness. My discoveries have made me appreciate the interdependency and accountability to my community and therefore myself.

With my recent focus on the fires, I am carrying forward the lessons I learned from my reliance on the dancer, friendship, and medical communities. Reflecting on my childhood in a small town logging community (now devastated by the fire) has reacquainted me with the forgotten methods of Native American forest management. I am making a pact with myself to embrace past lessons and use these experiences to make a difference. A dear friend told me once that there is no such thing as a mistake---if you learn from it.

Family

‍We relied on our families more than ever in 2020. We even expanded our families by adopting animal companions. Let's remember the many ways our family and furry friends enriched our lives last year and bring more of this positive energy into the present moment.

When we carry foward the joy and meaning of these special relationships, even if we feel too busy or as though we don't have room in our lives for another companion, we can remember how much we need each other to complete our lives. We always have room for quality relationships. When we need help, chances are there are other people facing the same challenges. Most of the time resources are within arm's reach to help ease the transition.

New Perspectives

‍We can expose ourselves to new ways of living and customize the ways for our betterment despite the storm clouds outside our doors. I feel it is important and imperative that we retain our open-mindedness to keep the spark alive in our hearts and minds. By taking into consideration lessons from the past and the experiences of thought leaders, we can continue to grow, learn, and improve our lives and communities. A simple example is demonstrated by how this group of Australians approach forest management. They involve the local community and their natural resources to facilitate synergistic changes.
