Grow Your Potential

The spring season symbolizes growth. Whether the buzzing bees, blooming flowers, Easter holiday, or the urge to spring clean motivate you, when you pay attention you can feel the impulses gently nudging you to shift gears, make changes, or start something new.

Psychoanalyst, Carl Rogers, wrote his famous "potato story," which describes our natural tendencies to grow toward the light. As a child, while sleeping in the basement, Rogers noticed that the potato crop, despite living in complete darkness, still thrived. The potatoes found the smallest crack of light from within the dark walls and drank the nourishment. They grew toward the light!

We are all destined to grow and flourish. Sometimes our thoughts, experiences, and histories get in the way of us seizing our growth potentials! Fortunately, we can always make a decision, right here, right now, to grow toward the light! The opportunities exist once we open our eyes and hearts.

Grow Awareness of Thoughts

Millions of people suffer from low back pain, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic pain. Conventional treatment focuses on medication and symptom reduction. However, our symptoms and personal experience of pain are also driven by our thoughts. Sometimes we develop habits of thinking a certain way that feed the cycle of illness and pain. This doesn't mean that our symptoms "are all in our head," but it does mean that in order to feel good, we have to become aware of the thoughts in our head.

Dr. Jeffrey Lackner at University at Buffalo describes how our errors in thinking contribute to pain cycles and other unpleasant symptoms. As a patient living with autoimmune disease and Crohn's disease, I am empowered when I realize there is an aspect of my symptoms that I can control. My thoughts are my own and turns out, I have a lot of negative and worry thoughts. Growing awareness of our thoughts opens the door to mind and body health.

Grow Interest in New Activities

Join Pawso and Samba to celebrate International Dance Day! Even if you aren't a dancer, exposing yourself to other creative arts is one way to spark inspiration and learn something new about yourself. When we fuel our passions, pique our curiosities, and nourish our minds, we are naturally growing toward the light and building vitality. In this interview with world champion Beata, she talks about how to grow toward the light despite living with cancer. Scoll to the bottom of the article to watch her incredible dancing and to honor International Dance Day!

Grow Inner Peace

Did you know that you can listen to specific frequencies and receive many of the same benefits as meditation? Binaural beats can lower stress, increase focus, aid with sleep and relaxation, boost mood, and assist with pain management. Research has shown that in addition to affecting our states of consciousness, binaural beats have the important effect of synchronizing our brain hemispheres. In as little as ten minutes a day, according to Dr. Elizabeth Krasnoff, the therapeutic benefits of binaural beats can improve your life.
